Supporting documentation needed to apply for a British passport - Adults (By birth in Nigeria or overseas, by descent).

The following documents must be presented in support of your passport application.  Original documents are always required and will be returned on completion.  Photocopies are not accepted.

 

Each item on the following list of documents is annotated as ESSENTIAL or DESIRABLE to your application.  If you do not have sufficient ESSENTIAL documents, your application cannot be accepted.

 

1.      BIRTH CERTIFICATES one of the following is Essential:

·        Original contemporaneous NPC BC or

·        NPC (recent replacement) or                                                                                  

·        Attestation of birth                                                                                                       

 

2.      IDENTITY DOCUMENTS

·        Both your parent’s British or Nigerian passports (Essential)                                         

NB:  If you are claiming British Citizenship through a parent born, adopted, registered or naturalised in the United Kingdom, your parent may already hold a British Passport but an application can still be accepted if no British Passport is or was held.

·        Evidence of  how that parent became British: e.g. original birth certificate or original naturalisation certificate (Essential)                                                                           

·        Current ID card for a parent that may have no passport (Essential)                 

·        Child’s ID Card or Nigerian Passport (Essential) 

 

3.                    LIFE PHOTOGRAPHS

Please have these organised, (labelled with names and dates and in order) before attending

 

·                    Photographs of you as a baby (in which you can clearly be identified) with your parents in Nigeria (Desirable)

·                    Photographs of you growing up in Nigeria with your parents and siblings (if any siblings) (Desirable)

·                    If your parents are married you also need to submit their wedding photographs (Desirable)

 

4.         TIME OF BIRTH DOCUMENTS – APPLICANT

These should be one year before and up to two years after your birth

·                    Mother’s original antenatal/postnatal/delivery notes from hospital. If unable to obtain original records, please submit copies, which have been certified by the hospital. (Essential)

·                    Health Cards, from the hospital, doctors or clinic (Desirable)

·                    Immunisation/vaccination cards (Desirable)

·                    Receipts for the birth, medical treatment (Desirable)

·                      Baptism certificate, Family Allowance book, Baby Book (Desirable)

·                      Letter from Hospital confirming birth. (Desirable)

5.         PARENT’S DOCUMENTS

These should be one year before and up to two years after your birth

 

·                    UK Marriage Certificate if married in the UK (Essential)

·                    NGA Marriage Certificate if married in Nigeria (Essential)

·                    If either parent has married before, Decree Absolute of prior statutory

marriage  (Essential)

·                    College Diploma / Certificates (Desirable)

·                    Employment / tax records, salary slips (Desirable)

·                    Building Society Books/ Bank statements (Desirable)

·                    Medical Cards  (Desirable)

·                    Driving Licence / ID Cards (Desirable)

 

6.         SCHOOL & UNIVERSITY DOCUMENTS – APPLICANT

·                    Reports, Results & testimonials for all schools attended and all years (Desirable)

·                    School Certificates for all exams (Desirable)

 

7.         DEATH CERTIFICATES

·                    If Father, mother or any sibling is deceased a DEATH certificate (not medical cause of death certificate) must be submitted. (Essential)

 

8.                     NAME CHANGES

·                    If you are now using a different name to the one on your birth certificate then

be prepared to present a sworn affidavit (stating which name you wish to be known as)

and documents showing what names you have been using (Essential prior to issue)

 

·                    If the name change is through marriage you will need to present your marriage certificate and photographs from your wedding.  You will also need to provide identification for your husband (Essential prior to issue)

 

·                    If names are abbreviated in your documents please present Sworn Affidavit to support this (Essential prior to issue)
